PEAK Award Winner: BCSI – Gag Cards
In the Nov/Dec 2019 issue of PS Magazine, we highlighted the 11 winners of PSDA’s annual PEAK Awards. Today we take a look at one of those winners and their winning project and catch up with them post-win.
Personalized stationery products manufacturer BCSI was seeking a ways to help distributors inspire their customers and promote BCSI’s products and services. Specialty print features such as foil, painted edges, spot gloss and double-thick stocks are becoming popular among end users, and examples help to fuel creativity for projects. The company wanted to help distributors and their customers visualize options for print features in a fun way that kick-started conversations.
Over 20 years ago, BCSI used to pass out what it called “gag cards” as giveaways. “These business card-sized cards had comical, corny sayings and were always a hit during trade shows,” the company says. “Back then they were very simple, printed in black thermography ink on white cover stock.” BCSI decided to bring back the gag card concept to promote its specialty print features. The company incorporated many of its design possibilities onto the cards, including various stock weights and finishing options. Each card features a funny or thought-provoking phrase. Print specs are included on the back of each card, so customers can identify and communicate options they like with their sales or customer service representative.
This project achieved a new and fun way for distributors to present specialty print options to their customers. “We hope this marketing tool will help promote and encourage mutual sales growth with us and our distributor partners,” the company says.
We sat down with Emily Myers, BCSI vice president of sales and marketing, to learn a little more about the gag cards and BCSI’s plans for the future.
What is your favorite of the “gag card” sayings?
My first favorite “gag card” saying is “Who’s more fun than us? More of us!” It suggests a welcoming feeling of family and togetherness. That’s the type of feeling we want our distributors and employees to have: We’re in this together as a team! And we’re always excited to grow our family of distributor partners and friends. Bring on the fun!
My other favorite is “Living Bold, One Risk at a Time.” This statement isn’t necessarily funny, but it’s a great reminder that it’s sometimes a good idea to make ourselves vulnerable and step out of our comfort zone. Living bold and taking risks results in growth and change. BCSI’s founder, Paul Marchessault, often said, “The one thing that’s constant in this world is change,” which is still so true in our industry. This statement should probably be made into a BCSI Gag card, too!
Which print feature do you find the coolest?
A popular/unique feature is the combination of soft touch laminate with painted edges. Painted edges can result in a really cool look when the edge contrasts with the printed graphics on business cards.
Is BCSI planning on trying anything new in 2020? What are you looking forward to most next year?
We are very excited about our improved ability to provide faster turnaround for digital print-on-demand orders as a result of new HP Indigo equipment. Our capacity to provide two-day average turnaround for our standard products has never been better. We expect our customers will notice their service levels continually improving now through 2020.
